Second Post

My new Email server is up and running today. It has been a long time since I ran my own server, that one was located in my back room this one is in the cloud. A long time ago I used an Internet Service Provider named [Internet Junction] (https://ij.net) who provided an ISDN connection providing 64 kbs of throughput from my home to the Internet, along with 5 pubic IP addresses. This allowed me to run a couple of OpenBSD servers running DNS and Web services. It worked rather well and once ADSL became available I switched over to the higher bandwidth technology, still with IJ.NET. I looked today and saw that IJ’s website was still up but looks rather dated.

Back then, I was very interested in matters of privacy and personal security. Over time my enthusiasm waned with many things dragging me into the mainstream. Today I am starting to think about those issues again, and starting to poke around to see what I can do to reduce my exposure to the chaotic world of corporate information harvesting. More and more I take to heart the idea that “If the service is free you are not the customer but the product.” Even services I pay for like to grab some extra profit margin by snooping about.

We will see where this all goes, but for now I will start out slow.
